April to October is the practical window for northern Pakistan. April and May bring blossom in Hunza, June to August opens the high valleys including Naran and Babusar Pass, and late September to October delivers autumn colour with fewer people. Winter closes most of it.

Hunza is about 790 kilometres and fifteen hours from Islamabad on the Karakoram Highway, or two and a half hours from Gilgit. April brings blossom, October brings autumn colour, and both book out early. A four-by-four is needed for the side valleys, not the main highway.

A Corolla boot takes two large suitcases comfortably and four badly. For a family of five travelling for more than a weekend, a Honda BR-V or KIA Sportage is usually the right answer, and a Hiace once you are past six people or a week of luggage.

Lahore to Naran is about 570 kilometres and takes nine hours of driving via the M-2 to Islamabad, the Hazara Motorway to Abbottabad, and the Kaghan Valley road through Balakot. The road is open roughly May to September. Book a four-by-four, not a sedan.

Islamabad to Mingora is 250 kilometres and about four hours via the M-1 and the Swat Expressway, which has cut hours off the old route. Malam Jabba and Kalam are the two onward destinations. Swat is accessible year round; Kalam and above need clearance in winter.

A Hiace High Roof seats thirteen and a Toyota Coaster twenty-two. Below fourteen people the Hiace is cheaper and more manoeuvrable; above it the Coaster is the only single-vehicle answer. Neither has the ground clearance for roads above Naran — use four-by-fours there.

Both handle every northern road we run. The Fortuner is the cheaper of the two and better on long motorway sections; the Prado is more comfortable on rough ground and quieter over a fourteen-hour day. For Skardu and Hunza we recommend the Prado, for Naran and Swat the Fortuner is plenty.

Lahore to Islamabad is 380 kilometres and four hours on the M-2 motorway. It is the easiest long drive in Pakistan — dual carriageway the whole way, well policed and with proper service areas at Bhera and Kallar Kahar. A sedan is entirely adequate.

Karachi to Lahore is about 1,210 kilometres and fourteen hours of driving on the M-9, M-5, M-4 and M-3. It is now motorway almost the whole way. Most people break the journey at Multan or Sukkur. Anyone quoting ten hours is either speeding or not counting stops.

Islamabad to Skardu is roughly 690 kilometres and takes about fourteen hours on the Karakoram Highway and the Skardu Road. Most people break it overnight at Chilas. Flights are quicker but cancel for weather; the road does not. A four-by-four and an experienced mountain driver are essential.

Peshawar to Islamabad is 185 kilometres and about two hours on the M-1 motorway. It is the quickest intercity motorway run in the country between two major cities, well surfaced and lightly trafficked compared with the M-2. A sedan is entirely adequate.

Book premium wedding cars four to six weeks ahead in season — November to March and the weeks after Eid. Most families take one premium car for the dulha, two or three sedans for family, and a Coaster or Hiace for the baraat. Flower decoration is fitted free; flowers are billed at cost.

Multan to Karachi is 890 kilometres and about eleven hours, running down the M-5 through Sukkur then the M-9 from Hyderabad. It is motorway nearly the whole way. Sukkur at five hours is the natural break. A sedan handles it comfortably.

Murree is two hours from Islamabad in clear weather and considerably longer in snow, when the Expressway can close and traffic backs up from Jhika Gali. Between December and February take a four-by-four, leave early, and be willing to turn back. Check conditions the same morning.

Quetta to Karachi is about 690 kilometres and nine hours on the N-25 RCD Highway, through Mastung, Khuzdar and Hub. It is a national highway rather than a motorway, so the pace is slower and services are sparse. Fuel at Khuzdar and carry water.

Karachi to Gwadar is about 630 kilometres and takes nine hours on the N-10 Makran Coastal Highway. It is one of the best drives in Pakistan — largely empty, well surfaced, and following the Arabian Sea for most of its length. Fuel and water before Ormara; services are sparse.

Every car we rent comes with a driver. It removes the security deposit and the licence check, it puts someone in the car who knows the route, and it means damage disputes do not happen. For intercity and northern travel it is also simply safer than driving unfamiliar roads yourself.

Ziyarat groups usually book a Hiace for thirteen or a Coaster for twenty-two, with the driver staying with the group for the whole trip. Prayer stops are built into the schedule rather than negotiated on the road, and the driver's meals and accommodation are inside the quoted fare.
