Karachi to Gwadar on the Makran Coastal Highway
Karachi to Gwadar is about 630 kilometres and takes nine hours on the N-10 Makran Coastal Highway. It is one of the best drives in Pakistan — largely empty, well surfaced, and following the Arabian Sea for most of its length. Fuel and water before Ormara; services are sparse.

The road
The Makran Coastal Highway is the best-surfaced long road in the country that almost nobody drives. It leaves Karachi via Hub, turns west along the coast, and runs to Gwadar with the sea on one side for most of the way.
Traffic is light to the point of emptiness in places. This makes for excellent driving and also means help is not close by if something goes wrong, which is the main reason we send a well-maintained vehicle and a driver who has done it before.
Nine hours is realistic including stops. It can be done faster and there is no good reason to.
What to stop for
Kund Malir beach, roughly four hours in, is the obvious stop and deserves the reputation. The Hingol National Park section around it is the most dramatic scenery on the route.
The Princess of Hope and the Balochistan Sphinx are natural rock formations in Hingol, both directly beside the road, and take ten minutes between them.
Ormara and Pasni are the two towns of any size before Gwadar. Both have fuel. Neither has much else.
Practical planning
Fuel in Karachi and again at Ormara or Pasni. The gaps between stations are long and a car running low on this road is a genuine problem rather than an inconvenience.
Carry water and food. There are stretches of two hours with nothing at all, and the roadside options that do exist are basic.
Mobile coverage is intermittent along the coast. Tell someone your plan before you leave Karachi.
Vehicle and timing
The road itself is fine for a sedan — it is well surfaced throughout. We more often send a Sportage or a Fortuner for the ground clearance at the beach turn-offs and for the comfort over nine hours.
Winter is the season. Between November and February the coast is pleasant; between May and August it is punishingly hot and the drive stops being enjoyable.
For Gwadar itself, a day is enough to see the port, the Hammerhead and the beaches. Most bookings are two nights with the drive at each end.
Before you book
Check the current position on travel to the Makran coast before committing to dates. Conditions on this route are settled most of the time and occasionally are not, and we will give you a straight answer when you ring.
Accommodation in Gwadar is limited and concentrated around the new town and Marine Drive. Book it before the car, because the room is the constraint rather than the vehicle.
Allow a full day at each end for the drive. Trying to fit Karachi to Gwadar and back into a weekend means eighteen hours of driving for one day on the coast.
