Hiace or Coaster: Choosing a Vehicle for a Group

A Hiace High Roof takes thirteen passengers with standing room and a luggage rack. A Toyota Coaster takes twenty-two. A Suzuki APV takes eight and is the right answer for a large family rather than a group.

Below fourteen people, the Hiace is cheaper to hire, easier to park and better in city traffic. There is no reason to take a Coaster for twelve people.

Above thirteen, one Coaster beats two Hiaces on both cost and coordination. Two vehicles means two drivers, two sets of directions and a group that arrives in two halves.

Neither vehicle has meaningful ground clearance. For the northern areas above Naran, on the Skardu road, or anywhere requiring four-wheel drive, the answer is multiple four-by-fours rather than one van, whatever the seat count says.

The Coaster is a large vehicle on narrow hill roads. It is fine to Murree, Abbottabad and Swat on the main routes; it is not fine on valley roads.

In dense old-city areas — Lahore's walled city, Karachi's Saddar, Peshawar's Qissa Khwani — a Coaster is genuinely difficult and a Hiace is much better.

Baraat transport is the most common Coaster booking. Twenty-two seats moves a wedding party in one go and keeps everyone together, which is the point.

Ziyarat and religious group travel is the other steady Coaster use, usually multi-day with the driver staying with the group.

Hiace bookings split between airport runs for large families with luggage, office and factory shift transport, and northern tours where thirteen people are going to Murree or Swat rather than anywhere requiring clearance.

Both have roof racks and both need them once you are at full seat count. Thirteen people with thirteen suitcases will not fit inside a Hiace.

Tell us the luggage at booking rather than on the day. It changes the vehicle recommendation more often than people expect.

For a group flying in, the arithmetic is usually bags first and seats second — a group that fits in one van on paper often needs two once the suitcases are counted.

Neither vehicle is an SUV and neither pretends to be. Over four or five hours both are perfectly comfortable; over twelve, passengers in the back row of a Coaster will feel it.

For long routes with a group, we often suggest splitting into a Hiace plus a sedan rather than one Coaster, so the people least comfortable travelling — elderly passengers, anyone unwell — ride in the car.

Air conditioning in both is adequate rather than powerful. In a Punjab or Sindh summer, an early start does more for comfort than any vehicle choice.
