Prado or Fortuner for the Northern Areas?
Both handle every northern road we run. The Fortuner is the cheaper of the two and better on long motorway sections; the Prado is more comfortable on rough ground and quieter over a fourteen-hour day. For Skardu and Hunza we recommend the Prado, for Naran and Swat the Fortuner is plenty.

The short answer
If the trip is Naran, Kaghan, Swat or Murree, take the Fortuner. It is capable of everything those roads ask, it costs less per day, and the difference in comfort over five or six hours is small.
If the trip is Skardu, Hunza, Deosai or anything over about ten hours of driving, take the Prado. The difference is not capability — both will get there — it is how you feel when you arrive.
If the trip is a wedding or a client pickup where the car is being looked at, take the Land Cruiser and stop reading.
Where the Fortuner wins
Price, first and most obviously. On a multi-day northern tour the daily difference compounds into real money, and for many trips you are paying for comfort you will not particularly notice.
It is also the better motorway car of the two in the sense that matters: it is happy at motorway speeds for hours, and a great deal of any northern trip from Punjab is motorway before the mountains start.
Seven seats, same as the Prado, and a diesel engine that is economical over long distances.
Where the Prado wins
Ride quality over broken surfaces. The stretch of the Karakoram Highway through Besham, and the Skardu Road along the gorge, are exactly the conditions where the Prado's suspension earns its cost.
Noise. Over a fourteen-hour day the difference in cabin noise between the two is not subtle, and it is the main reason passengers arrive less exhausted.
Reputation on the road. In the north, a Prado is the vehicle everyone recognises and it opens doors at hotels and checkposts in a way that is hard to quantify but real.
What about a Land Cruiser or a Sportage
The Land Cruiser V8 is the top of our fleet and the most comfortable thing we can send north. It costs accordingly and most northern tours do not need it, but for a family who wants the trip to be effortless it is the answer.
The KIA Sportage is a modern, quiet SUV and excellent on motorway and metalled hill roads — Murree, Swat, Abbottabad. We do not send it past Naran or on the Skardu road, because it is a soft-roader rather than a four-by-four.
For groups above five going north, two four-by-fours beat one van. A Hiace has the seats but not the clearance.
Booking either one
Both are in demand through the northern season and both should be booked well ahead for July, August and October. The Prado goes first.
Tell us the full itinerary rather than just the destination. Whether you are doing Deosai, or continuing to Khunjerab, or staying on metalled roads throughout, changes which of the two we would recommend.
If your dates are flexible and the Prado is taken, ask about the Land Cruiser before settling for the Fortuner. It is often available when the Prado is not, and the price gap is smaller than people assume.
