Karachi to Lahore by Road: Fourteen Hours on the Motorway
Karachi to Lahore is about 1,210 kilometres and fourteen hours of driving on the M-9, M-5, M-4 and M-3. It is now motorway almost the whole way. Most people break the journey at Multan or Sukkur. Anyone quoting ten hours is either speeding or not counting stops.

The motorway chain
This journey has been transformed by the motorway network. It is now the M-9 from Karachi to Hyderabad, the M-5 from Hyderabad through Sukkur to Multan, the M-4 from Multan to the Faisalabad area, and the M-3 into Lahore.
That is dual carriageway for the overwhelming majority of 1,210 kilometres, with the old N-5 National Highway now largely a local road on this corridor.
Fourteen hours is the realistic figure with normal stops. It is a long day and it is a comfortable one, which was not true of this route ten years ago.
Where to break it
Multan is the natural halfway point in practice, at about eleven hours from Karachi. It has everything — hotels, fuel, food — and it is where we most often stage an overnight stop.
Sukkur, at about six hours, is the other option and is better if you want a shorter first day and a longer second.
Doing it in one push is possible with two drivers and we will arrange that on request. With one driver, fourteen hours of motorway is at the limit of what is sensible and we would rather stop.
Cost and vehicle
Fuel and tolls are inside the fare, as on every intercity booking. The one-way fare already accounts for the car returning.
A sedan does this route perfectly well and is what most people book. For a family with luggage for a long stay, a BR-V or Sportage is worth the difference in boot space alone.
This is a route where the driver matters. Fourteen hours is a real day's work and our long-route drivers are the ones who do it regularly rather than whoever is free.
Alternatives worth weighing
The flight is under two hours and is cheaper than a car for one or two people. For a family of five with luggage, the arithmetic reverses.
The train is comfortable and slower. It makes sense if the journey is the point rather than the arrival.
The car wins on door-to-door convenience, on luggage, and when you want to stop somewhere in between — Sukkur, Multan or Bahawalpur — which a flight cannot offer.
Doing it with one driver or two
Fourteen hours is at the edge of what one driver should do in a day, and we would rather not push it. The default is a single driver with an overnight stop.
If you need the journey done in one continuous run, we send two drivers who swap. It costs more and it is the safe way to do it, rather than asking one man to drive through the night at the end of a full day.
Anyone offering to do Karachi to Lahore straight through with one driver and no break is quoting you a risk, not a service. It is worth asking the question of whoever you book with.
