Peshawar to Islamabad on the M-1: Two Easy Hours
Peshawar to Islamabad is 185 kilometres and about two hours on the M-1 motorway. It is the quickest intercity motorway run in the country between two major cities, well surfaced and lightly trafficked compared with the M-2. A sedan is entirely adequate.

The easiest long drive in Pakistan
At 185 kilometres and two hours, Peshawar to Islamabad is barely a long drive at all. The M-1 is a modern motorway with light traffic by national standards and a consistently good surface.
The old GT Road alternative through Nowshera and Attock takes three hours or more and passes through towns the whole way. Unless you need to stop at one of them, there is no case for it.
This is our most frequently booked Peshawar route by a wide margin, in both directions.
Timing and traffic
Two hours holds most of the day. The exceptions are getting out of Peshawar's old city in the morning and into Rawalpindi in the evening, each of which can add half an hour.
Pickups from University Town or Hayatabad are straightforward and put you on the motorway quickly. Pickups from around Qissa Khwani take longer to clear the city.
If you are connecting to a flight, remember Islamabad International is west of the city and is reached before you get to the sectors, which actually works in your favour from this direction.
Onward from Islamabad
A great many Peshawar bookings do not stop at Islamabad. The obvious continuations are Murree, another two hours, and Lahore, another four on the M-2.
For northern trips, Peshawar to Abbottabad direct is three hours and avoids Islamabad entirely.
Peshawar to Swat is a separate and shorter journey — three hours via the Swat Expressway — and does not go via Islamabad at all.
Vehicle
A sedan. There is nothing about this route that asks for anything more, and a Corolla Altis Grande or Civic is comfortable for two hours.
For a family with luggage, the usual step up to a BR-V or Sportage applies.
Groups take a Hiace comfortably; the M-1 is an easy road for a van.
What it costs and how to book it
The fare is quoted one way with fuel and motorway tolls included, and the car's return is already accounted for in it. There is nothing to settle at a toll plaza and no empty-return surcharge at the end.
A same-day return costs meaningfully less than two one-way fares, because the car was coming back regardless. If you are going to Islamabad for a meeting and returning the same evening, say so when you book and the price reflects it.
Because this route is short and heavily travelled, we can usually place a car at short notice in either direction. It is one of the few long routes where booking the same morning is realistic rather than optimistic.
