Lahore to Naran by Road: Route, Timing and What to Book
Lahore to Naran is about 570 kilometres and takes nine hours of driving via the M-2 to Islamabad, the Hazara Motorway to Abbottabad, and the Kaghan Valley road through Balakot. The road is open roughly May to September. Book a four-by-four, not a sedan.

The route in three legs
The drive splits naturally into three parts, and thinking about it that way makes the timing obvious. The first leg is Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2 — 380 kilometres of good motorway, four hours, and the only stretch where you will make real speed. Stop at Bhera or Kallar Kahar; both have proper service areas.
The second leg is Islamabad to Balakot via the Hazara Motorway and the N-35. This is another two and a half hours and the road is still excellent as far as Mansehra. Abbottabad is the obvious lunch stop and the last place with a full range of shops and fuel.
The third leg is Balakot to Naran, and it is the one that decides your vehicle. Sixty-odd kilometres of valley road that takes two to three hours depending on traffic, surface and how many times you stop for the river. This is not a bad road, but it is a mountain road.
When the road is open
Naran is seasonal and the season is short. The valley road generally opens in May once the snow clears and closes again in late September or October. Babusar Pass, which continues north from Naran towards Chilas and the Karakoram Highway, opens later and closes earlier — usually July to September.
Outside that window the road to Naran is closed by snow and no vehicle will get you through. If you are planning a trip in April or October, ring and ask before booking anything else. We would rather tell you the truth about the road than take a booking that cannot happen.
Peak season is July and August, which is also when the road is busiest and accommodation is most expensive. June and early September are quieter and the weather is often better.
Which vehicle you actually need
A sedan will get you to Naran bazaar in reasonable conditions. It will not get you to Lake Saif ul Malook, which is the reason most people go. That last stretch from Naran up to the lake is a rough jeep track and it needs ground clearance and four-wheel drive.
We send a Toyota Prado or a Fortuner for Naran trips as a matter of course. Both handle the valley road comfortably and both can do the lake track. A Land Cruiser is the same job with more room and more comfort.
If you are a group of more than five, the honest answer is two four-by-fours rather than one Hiace, because the Hiace has the seats but not the clearance for anything above Naran itself.
Practical notes
Fuel up in Abbottabad or Mansehra. Petrol is available in Balakot and Naran but the price rises with the altitude and the queues at peak weekends are long.
Mobile signal is patchy above Balakot and largely absent above Naran. Agree your plans with the driver before you lose coverage rather than assuming you can call.
Nights are cold even in July. Anyone who has packed only for a Punjab summer will regret it by the second evening.
